The unborn awareness is your mind. It is unborn because you cannot find it, you can’t show where it came from or where it goes. Yet it is awareness. What is the meaning of this?
In his book on the lojong slogans Training the Mind and Cultivating Loving-Kindness, Chogyam Rungpa offers this guidance to working with this slogan:
“Look at your basic mind, just simple awareness which is not divided into sections, the thinking process that exists within you. Just look at that, see that. Examining does not mean analyzing. It is just viewing things as they are, in the ordinary sense.”
Rungpa’s student Judy Lief also emphasizes the idea that the exercise here is to observe, again and again, one’s own mind to begin to experience its unborn nature, its root emptiness, and not to analyze.
